The Equalizer 2014 Draft Breakdown

Quick summary for any readers not from the Equalizer
Draft Type: Auction
League Type: PPR, Keeper
Roster Spots: 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 FLEX, 1 TE, 1 D/ST, 1 K, 7 BE
Keeper Value: 2013 Draft Price+10%, Free Agent pickups - $1

Our most expensive player of the draft was Matt Forte who went to Dark Force for a cool $99. As many would expect the most expensive keeper off the board was Ethan’s Mom’s Panties’ Adrian Peterson. Owner Brad Kervin, son of the great Joe Kervin, was able to retain Peterson’s rights for a measly 66 bucks.

Now that we have given out some recognition for spending lots of cash, let’s take a look as some league averages. Let’s start by looking at the types of players being drafted this year.

With the most roster spots to fill, it’s not surprising to see that WR and RB were the most popular choices. WR just edged out RB which is typical in our PPR league as opposed to standard leagues. All in all, the average roster is comprised of 2 QB, 5.2 RB, 5.4 WR, 1.3 TE, 1 D/ST, 1 K. There are a few anomalies to speak of, (Cough, Cough, SGF Dirtdogs…) but I will refer to those in the team by team breakdown.

Not all too much different from the positions spread, but with RBs taking the lead this time, here is where all of our money went.

Following convention, teams spent biggest on the backfield. The average price of a RB this year was $19.89, with WRs following closely behind at $17.66. With only a few elite guys at each position league owners spent an average of $13.96 on QBs and $13.50 on TEs. D/ST and K brought in the small paychecks at $2 and $1.85 respectively.

Team by Team Breakdown
Disclaimer:  The following opinions expressed are strictly the opinions of the author and not that of the Las Vegas Outlaws organization or The Equalizer fantasy football league

Ants In My Eyes Johnson
Studs ruled the day for Ants who spent nearly 80% of their cash on A.J Green, Dez Bryant, and Arian Foster. Owner Collins informed upper management to spend big at WR and they listened, spending $73 dollars above the league average and outbidding all others at the position. The Ants will have their fingers crossed that the injury bug doesn’t bite the “Big Three”

 Dark Force
Also spending big on studs, Force gave big paydays to Matt Forte and Demaryius Thomas. However, they had some extra cash lying around after locking down the big names of Eddie Lacy and Julius Thomas with hometown discounts. In spite of it all, ESPN automatically gave Force a draft grade of F because Geno Smith is their starting QB. Not sure I disagree with the ESPN programmers…

Ethan's Mom's Panties
Besides taking home the award for most expensive keeper and most offensive team name, the Panties organization gave Aaron Rodgers a big pay day to take the ‘most money spent at QB’ crown. The team looks well balanced to start the year, but the Panties will need to clean up well on the waiver wire and avoid leaving skid marks sitting on their roster.

Las Vegas Outlaws
The Outlaws used their franchise tag to keep their QB spending down to only $1 and put their eggs in the Nick Foles basket. However, it’s never a good sign when your keeper RB is busted for driving while high on his way to team activities. The Outlaws made some questionable draft day decisions that could hinder the organization, but at least there are no New York Jets on their roster.

PB Pandemonium
Pandemonium boasts a well balanced roster. Management didn’t spend more than $37 on a single player and was able to spend more than $10 on 8 of his players. Most league members tried to save some money for draft day by taking discount keepers, but Pandemonium spent the league high on keepers to lock down Peyton Manning and Demarco Murray. Will Pandemonium still be in the running come playoff time? Will Peyton’s eight neck surgeries keep his head on his shoulders for a second straight season? Only time will tell…

Touch My TD's
The way TD’s spread the money around the roster is very impressive. TD’s was able to spend at least $10 on 11 of their players! And that doesn’t even include keepers, Andre Ellington and Cordarrelle Patterson, which re-signed with the team for a buck apiece. That just leaves D/ST, K, and a backup running back that went for less than $5. Equalizer fans are eager to see how far this draft strategy will take TD’s this season.

SGF Dirtdogs
After clinching the first ever BAMA last season, the Dirtdogs did not have much going for them headed into the 2014 draft. Besides hanging on to the Broncos D/ST, management elected to wipe the slate clean and head into the draft with pockets full of cash. However, like their owner at a strip club, the organization may have fallen in love (with only running backs). The Dirtdogs locked up some big fantasy names for the starting lineup but the bench is highly questionable. After grabbing a backup QB, the Dirtdogs filled the bench with 6 RBs. God forbid one of their WRs has a bye week…  The Dirtdogs may want to hit the trading block to find some reinforcements.

The Fat Cats
The Cats future is up in the air, literally. Ownership is hoping to take advantage of the air attack in this PPR league. The Cats invested 84% of their cash at WR and TE. However, don’t think they forgot about the run game completely. The Cats kept fan favorite Zac Stacy on the cheap for $1, not too shabby. Whether by land, by air, or by sea, the Cats hope this roster will keep the BAMA off their ankle.

SASKATCHEWAN Rough Riders
Speaking of ‘by land’ it appears that Riders ownership will try and run opponents into the ground this season. The team spent big on backs this season funding a three-headed rushing attack of Morris, Lynch and Spiller with 78% of their budget. At $183 for all RBs the riders overspent the league average by $80 and the next closest team by $40. Saskatoonians will be watching extra closely this season to see if this draft strategy pans out.

Roc City Super Dudes
Things started out great for the Dudes who added Julio Jones for only $1, a transaction which has resulted in new league by-laws. Then the Dudes were able to add standout Alshon Jeffery to bolster a dangerous receiving attack. The Dudes draft strategy was well balanced, as management spent almost exactly the draft average on running backs. The Dudes hope to avoid the BAMA cage match this season with their deep lineup.

Redwood Chipalopes
Not the best start for the Chipalopes when franchise player, and weed connoisseur, Josh Gordon loses his appeal with the result being a one year suspension. However, at $3 bucks it was not a huge loss to take. The Chipalopes had plenty of cash in the pocket on draft night to flex their muscles and grab studs RB McCoy and WR Marshall. The duo makes up 65% of the budget so we will wait and see if they make up 65% of the team’s points. There is always a chance Johnny football brings a championship to Cleveland and an Equalizer title for the Chipalopes, right?..... right?

The Old Guys Club
The Club was unable to retain much of its fantasy stud filled and championship winning roster from a year ago. But the top brass were convinced that RBs Charles and Bernard will lead the team to a repeat. After spending a good chunk of change on keepers, the Club was able to put together a decent roster in the draft that puts him in contention yet again. However, the owners green light some reckless cash dumping on kickers. The club spent a league high $4. Why didn’t they think of the starving children around the world when they were throwing money around like that?
